Family Therapy
Family therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the relationships and dynamics between family members, with the objective of improving communication, resolving conflicts and strengthening emotional bonds. Unlike other forms of therapy, which work on an individual basis, here the family is approached as an interconnected system where the actions and emotions of one affect all the others. The goal is to restore balance and create a healthier and more harmonious environment for all members.
DURING THE SESSIONS
Work is done so that each family member can express their thoughts, emotions and concerns in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Therapy offers a space where everyone can be heard, which allows the identification of the problems that are affecting the family dynamics. Sometimes, conflicts are generated by a lack of communication, unfulfilled expectations or rigid roles that have been established within the family without anyone noticing.
ONE OF THE KEY ASPECTS
It is the identification of the roles that each member plays in the family and how these roles may be contributing to the current problems. For example, in some families, one member may assume the role of “mediator” in conflicts, while another may be perceived as the “rebel”. These patterns, although not always conscious, can perpetuate conflict and prevent it from being effectively resolved.
Therapy also focuses on improving communication within the family. Often, misunderstandings or resentments arise because emotions or needs are not expressed clearly. Through therapy, family members learn to communicate more openly and assertively, which reduces tensions and improves coexistence.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT ASPECT
It is conflict resolution. All families experience conflict at some point, but how it is handled can make a big difference in the overall well-being of the family. In therapy, strategies are taught to resolve conflicts more constructively, so that problems do not become chronic situations that damage long-term relationships.
In addition, work is being done to establish clear and healthy boundaries. Often, family problems arise when the boundaries between the responsibilities and personal spaces of each member are not clear. Setting appropriate boundaries allows each family member to have a greater sense of autonomy and mutual respect.
In family therapy, important changes in the family’s life that may be affecting its dynamics are also explored. These may include situations such as a move, the loss of a loved one, the arrival of a new family member, financial problems, separation/divorce, etc. Therapy offers a space where the family can process these changes together and find ways to adapt to them without losing emotional balance.
In summary, family therapy is a powerful tool for improving relationships within the family, fostering mutual understanding and creating a supportive environment where all members can thrive emotionally.
